Tennis Earns No. 3 Seed Entering A-10 Championships
April 14, 2015 | Tennis
On the strength of a 14-4 overall record during the regular-season and a 4-0 mark against conference foes, the UMass tennis team has been seeded No. 3 for this week's Atlantic 10 Championships held in Charlottesville, Va. The Championships kick-off on Thursday and will conclude Sunday afternoon at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
The Minutewomen will face No. 14 seed La Salle on Thursday at Noon with the winner facing either No. 6 seed Duquesne or No. 11 seed Saint Joseph's on Friday.
UMass is coming off back-to-back semifinal appearances in 2013 and 2014 at the Atlantic 10 Championships where the Minutewomen finished 3rd overall in each. In 2012, UMass reached the championship match before falling to Richmond.
The Minutewomen enter the tournament riding a seven-match win streak to close out the regular-season and have won 13 of their last 15 dual matches this year.
The squad features a trio of 20+ winners in singles play led by Carol Benito's 22-8 record this year. Anna Woosley and Ana Yrazusta each have 21 wins this season followed by Arielle Griffin and Chanel Glasper who each have 17 victories.
Glasper will look to extend her program record 76 career singles wins which she set this past weekend passing Jessica Podlofsky who previously set the record at 74.
The strength of the team will be in doubles play which is key for the Minutewomen. The tournament format gives the win to the first team to reach four points making doubles play critical. UMass has won the doubles point in 13-of-18 matches this year with the No. 1 pair of Benito and Yrazusta only falling three times.
On Sunday, Benito and Yrazusta tied the program's single-season record for doubles win with their 24th win of the year. Aarzoo Malik and Arielle Griffin enter postseason play with a 14-12 record having played mostly No. 2 doubles, while Glasper and Woosley have posted a 14-5 record together including a 9-4 mark at No. 3 doubles.
