Women's Track Earns Fifth At New England Championship

BOSTON, Mass - It was a record-breaking day at the New England Championship on Saturday as UMass women's track and field closed out the meet by claiming fifth place overall. The Minutewomen's efforts produced 52 points, while Northeastern took home gold with 81 points, followed by Southern Connecticut State, and New Haven to round out the top three. Heather MacLean and Rachel Hilliard shined on the track. MacLean took home the New England title in the 800 meter run and beat her own UMass program record. In the mile, Hilliard finished neck and neck to earn a silver medal.

In her 800 meter run victory, MacLean ran 2 minutes, 7.24-seconds to win the race and break her own UMass program record with a new career best. Hilliard had a fantastic showing in the mile run, running 4 minutes, 55.04-seconds and earned second place.

In the pentathlon, freshman Julia Witt earned seventh place with 3,006 points. Finishing seventh as well was the 4x800 relay team. Courtney Neves, Kelsey Sheridan, Carly Zinner, and Krista Webb ran a combined time of 9 minutes, 14.89-seconds. Just short of the top-eight, the women's 4x400 relay team of Bridget Deveau, Katie Powers, Kelsey Sheridan, and Jenna Smolag finished 9th at 3 minutes, 53.30-seconds.

The Minutewomen continued their success into the field. Ashley Palmer had an impressive showing in triple jump with a 38 foot, 7-inch performance to earn fifth. Witt took sixth in high jump with a 5 foot, 5-inch leap.

Next up for the Minutewomen comes the ECAC Championship on March 7 in Boston, Mass. The meet is slated to begin at 10:00 a.m.
