AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Athletic Department awarded its male and female Fall Scholar-Athlete honors to field hockey's Sam Carlino and football's Matt Sparks during the weekly UMass Sports Luncheon at the Mullins Center Tuesday afternoon.

A four-year starter in goal for UMass field hockey, Carlino wrapped up her Maroon and White playing days with a career 1.58 goals-against average and .731 save percentage over more than 6,300 minutes in the cage. Carlino won 56 games over her four seasons, during which she provided 14 individual shutouts and only missed one contest due to illness.

A two-time Atlantic 10 All-Conference honoree, Carlino also took home NFHCA all-region recognition in 2013 and picked up A-10 All-Tournament Team laurels on three occasions. Carlino is equally as lauded for her work in the classroom as the Kennett Square, Penn. native is a four-time recipient of the NFHCA National Academic Squad honor and three-time honoree on the A-10 All-Academic Team in addition to being a consistent member of the Atlantic 10 Commissioner¹s Honor Roll.

Sparks is a four-year letterwinner and two-year starting member of the Massachusetts football offensive line. In 2015, he anchored the line that blocked for Blake Frohnapfel's 2,919 passing yards and 16 touchdowns in the air. Additionally, the UMass offense rushed for 1,700 yards and 15 touchdowns while the receiving corps racked up 3,090 yards. A CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District and MAC All-Academic honoree, he was a member of the Rimington and Outland Trophy Watch Lists.
