October 27, 2015 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. - Hockey sophomore Dennis Kravchenko and Owen Wright and Oliver Wyeth of men’s swimming and diving have been tabbed as the co-UMass Student-Athletes of the Week, it was announced on Tuesday. The trio will be recognized at the weekly UMass Sports Luncheon on Wed., Oct. 28, beginning at noon in the Jim & Ellen Hunt Hospitality Room of the Football Performance Center.
Kravchenko tallied his team-leading fifth goal of the season and added an assist for his third multi-point game of the year in a 6-6 tie vs. New Hampshire to open Hockey East play last Friday. Both of the Laguna Niguel, Calif. native’s points came in the third period as he helped UMass post its biggest comeback in the program’s Division I history. The Minutemen erased a five-goal deficit to gain a point in the Hockey East standings. Kravchenko is the fastest Minuteman to reach double-digit points in a season (5g, 5a in four games) since James Marcou did so en route to a 51-point campaign in 2009-10.
Wyeth led the men's swimming and diving team to a 176-122 win over Boston University on Saturday afternoon. The sophomore recorded three individual first-place finishes and swam the lead leg in the first place 200 medley relay. Wyeth's winning time of 49.42 seconds in the 100 back set a new Joseph R. Rogers pool record and was a new program dual meet record as well. In addition to the 100 back, Wyeth also won the 200 back (1:49.14) and the 500 free (4:38.28).
Wright tied Wyeth for a meet-best three individual wins against the Terriers along with swimming the lead leg of the first-place 200 free relay team. His time of 20.69 seconds in the 50 freestyle is a new dual meet record for the program and stands as the ninth-fastest in program history. Wright also added wins in the 200 free (1:41.60) and the 100 free (45.70). Of the 10 first-place finishes for the Minutemen Wyeth and Wright accounted for eight.
This week's featured speakers at the UMass Sports Luncheon are Head Football Coach Mark Whipple and UMass Director of Athletics Ryan Bamford. It will mark Bamford’s first time addressing the luncheon attendees this academic year.
