Trio Earns UMass Student-Athlete of the Week Honors
October 13, 2015 | Hockey
AMHERST, Mass. - After a week which saw many highlight performances, it was the trio of Mark Morris (men’s soccer), Austin Plevy (hockey) and Owen Wright (men’s swimming) who were selected as the Dinn Brothers Student-Athletes of the Week as announced Tuesday by the UMass Sports Luncheon Committee.
Morris helped the men’s soccer program to a 1-0-1 week in Atlantic 10 play with a 3-2 win over rival Rhode Island and a 0-0 double-overtime draw against Saint Louis. The Tucson, Ariz., native was key in the win over the Rams as he scored all three goals for the Minutemen including the game-winner in the 90th minute of play. His was the first hat trick by a UMass player since 2002 and just the 31st hat trick in program history dating back to 1930. In Sunday’s draw against the Billikens, Morris played 105 of 110 possible minutes. Though he was held scoreless, he did crack a pair of shots and was key in UMass’ defense down the stretch. Plevy helped the hockey team go 2-0-0 on the road in the squad’s season-opening weekend with five points on four goals and one assist, including both game-winning goals. The freshman logged a hat trick and an assist in his collegiate debut, factoring in four of UMass’ six goals in a 6-3 win over Colorado College. He followed that performance the next night by scoring the game-winning goal with 3:07 remaining in regulation helping the Minutemen comeback from a three-goal deficit in the third period. The native of Langley, British Columbia, is the first Minuteman to tally a hat trick since Michael Pereira’s vs. Providence on Feb. 11, 2012. It was the first by a UMass rookie since James Marcou against Vermont on Jan. 25, 2008.
Wright led the men’s swimming program to a win at the Colgate Fall Classic to open the season. During the two-day invitational, the Attleboro, Mass., native picked up six first-place finishes in three individual events and as a member of three relay teams. The sophomore won the 50 freestyle, the 100 freestyle, and the 200 freestyle events. He swam the lead leg of the first-place 200 free relay and 400 free relay squads, while swimming the third leg of the first-place 200 medley relay team. For the weekend, he accounted for 160 of the team’s 1,395 points. The trio will be recognized at the weekly Sports Luncehon on Wed., Oct. 14 (12-1:15 p.m.). The event will take place in the Jim and Ellen Hunt Hospitality Room at the Football Performance Center.
This week’s featured speakers are Head Football Coach Mark Whipple and Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Coaches Ken O’Brien and Julie LaFreniere.
Free parking is available in Lots 10, 11, and 12, located adjacent to the Football Performance Center. A buffet lunch will be served for $14 per person.
