Singles Depth Leads UConn Past Women's Tennis 5-2

AMHERST, Mass. - Depth at singles play paved the way for visiting UConn as the Huskies defeated the UMass women's tennis team 5-2 on Thursday afternoon at Rudd Field. While the Minutewomen swept doubles play, UConn earned the match victory winning five-of-six singles matches.
The set-back gives UMass an 0-1 record in dual matches during the early portion of the fall. The Minutewomen will have a two-week break before returning to action against Providence on Oct. 15 at the Mullins Center Courts.
In doubles play, the No. 1 pair of Ana Yrazusta and Carol Benito picked up a closely fought 8-7 win, while Ruth Crawford and Anna Woosley secured the doubles point with their victory at No. 2 doubles (8-6). Arielle Griffin and Laura Moreno earned a win at No. 3 doubles as well picking up an 8-5 victory.
In singles, UConn won four-straight matches to clinch the team win. The Huskies earned wins at No. 2 singles, No. 6 singles, No. 5 singles and No. 1 singles before Woosley snapped the streak with a win at No. 3 singles (7-6, 7-6).
Benito fell in the final match to conclude on the day at No. 4 singles dropping a tightly fought battle 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7).
