AMHERST, Mass. - UMass women's soccer head coach Ed Matz has announced that the squad has added two mid-year transfers, 5'5" forward Marissa Milazzo and 5'6" attacking midfielder Emily Weimer. Both players will enter UMass this January and compete with the Minutewomen in the team's spring season.
"I am very excited to add two dynamic, offensive-minded players to our roster," said Matz. "Emily is a skillful, ball winning midfielder that will compete for playing time immediately. Marissa is a goal scoring forward with a very quick release on her shot. She loves to take defenders on and create scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates"
Milazzo comes to UMass from the University of South Florida where she redshirted this past fall as a freshman. Out of high school she was the No. 8-ranked player in the Florida Region and rated a four-star recruit by TopDrawerSoccer.com. She was twice named an OSCCA All-State honoree, earning a first team nod in 2012 & and second team recognition in 2011. Milazzo led her high school team in scoring all four years and was the leading scorer in ECNL Mid-Atlantic Division in 2012-13 prior to moving to Florida. She was a 2011 ODP National Camp participant and is the daughter of Kimberly and Michael Milazzo.
Weimer joins the Minutewomen out of American University where she appeared in five games this past fall as a freshman. Prior to her time with the Eagles, Weimer was a four-year starter at Duxbury High School in Duxbury, Mass., where she helped her squad to Division II South Sectional Finalist showings in 2010, 2011 and 2012 and a Patriot League Championship in 2013. The three-time Patriot League All-Star (2011-13) was the No. 1 ranked forward in the Patriot League as well as League MVP in 2013 after leading the league in points with 25 goals and 11 assists. Her stellar 2013 campaign also helped her capture Eastern Massachusetts First Team All Star, First Team Massachusetts All-State, Team MVP and Offensive Player of the Year accolades that season, as well. Weimer, the daughter of Mary and Chip Weimer, played club soccer for Scorpions Soccer Club of ECNL for 10 years and played Massachusetts ODP from 2008-2010.
