KINGSTON, R.I. - The Massachusetts women's swimming & diving team was the most consistent group in the all three sessions of the Rhode Island Invitational and that's why the Minutewomen won the event at the Tootell Aquatics Center on Saturday.
UMass entered Saturday's early session with a relatively slim 32-point lead over George Washington and 45 over URI. The Minutewomen outscored GW by 41 points in the first set of events to put a comfortable 73-point cushion in front of the Colonials.
UMass won the invitational with a score of 472.50, 82.5 points ahead of GW's 390. URI totaled 364.50 for third place.
After tying for second in the 200 Medley Relay, Meriza Werenski led a 1-3-4 finish in the 400 Individual Medley to create some separation from the Colonials.
Two events later, Molly Smyth captured the 200 Freestyle with Dasha Egkorova tying for second and Hayley Masi touching fifth.
Katie Arnott won a pair of individual races Saturday. She won the 100 Breaststroke by a tenth of a second and the 200 Breast - six races later - by 6-tenths.
Smyth completed the distance sweep with a victory in the 1000 Free in 10:15.91. She also won the 500 on Friday night. Werenski was the only other UMass entrant in the 1000 and finished second.
Jocelyn Yuen claimed second in both Butterfly races, finishing with top 3 places in all three individual events over the weekend.
Both UMass squads will return home to face Bryant next Saturday, Jan. 17 in a dual meet at the Joseph R. Rogers, Jr. Pool inside Boyden Gymnasium. The swimming-only meet will begin at Noon and the program's seniors will be recognized prior to the meet.
