Inside The Glass With Troy Power

Sept. 16, 2014

My name is Troy Power, a twenty-four year old, redshirt senior from Camarillo, California. This semester I will be blogging for UMassAthletics.com and giving you all behind the scenes look into what it's like to be a part of UMass hockey--our travel, the thrill of playing inside the Mullins Center and outside the rink and into our everyday lives.

Before speaking about the team, I would first like to tell you a little more about myself. After playing three seasons of junior hockey in United States Hockey League, I was recruited to play for UMass. Playing in Nebraska was a great learning experience and helped me mature into a young man ready for college. Being a native of Southern California, I never thought I would end up on the complete other side of the country. However, the longer I stay in Massachusetts, the more I love and grow accustom to everything except the freezing winter months! I am a Psychology and Communications double major, a son to Tom and Rhonda Power, a brother to Chad and Amanda, and an uncle to Brooklyn Patrick. Family is the most important thing in my life and I wouldn't be where I am without the support of the loved ones who have been there for me every step of my journey.

As I previously stated, I am a fifth-year senior, and due to a knee injury I suffered my junior year, I was granted an extra year of athletic eligibility. Although being injured for almost an entire season was a very long and stressful process, I consider it a blessing in disguise and really gave me time to reflect on the love and passion I have for the game of hockey.

Stepping on campus at the University of Massachusetts in the fall of 2010, the last thing I thought of was the end of the road. Although older teammates would mention how fast these precious years go, you still feel as if your college years will last forever. Now that I am the messenger, explaining to my younger teammates that they must cherish their time at UMass, I have seen first hand how fast time really does fly. Fortunately for myself, I am lucky enough to enjoy the sport I love for another season. With this last year I couldn't be more excited about the months ahead and the direction our team is going. With many guys coming back in early August, we have been able to work out and skate together to build early chemistry. Official practices are beginning soon, and emotions are running high with nervousness, excitement and bliss.

As the season becomes closer, I am anxious to share the experiences of the team through my eyes and hope those who read will enjoy hearing about the team as well as supporting us on the journey we are about to embark on. Looking forward to seeing everyone at our exhibition game against Dalhousie on Oct. 4 as well as our home opener on Oct 10. Go UMass!
