Benjamin Thomas Leads Men's XC At Minuteman Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. - Junior Benjamin Thomas' third-place finish at the Minuteman Invitational highlighted the 2014 season opener for the UMass men's cross country squad. As a team, the Minutemen finished fourth out of six squads with 67 points, while Vermont took first with 37 points followed by Boston College (54), and Maine (57). Amherst (156) and Sacred Heart (172) rounded out the field in fifth and sixth, respectively.

Thomas crossed the finish line in 19:11.10, good for third out of a field of 89 competitors, his first time leading UMass in his career. Cory Thomas followed for the Minutemen in ninth, completing the 6k in 19:24.70 in his UMass debut.

In his first cross country race since 2011, John Mantia finished third on the squad and 15th overall. Junior Blake Croteau (19th) and sophomore Paolo Tavares (21st) rounded out UMass' top-five with times of 19:39.50 and 19:42.40, respectively.

The Minutemen will have 13 days to rest up and prepare for their next meet as the team will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 26, at the Coast to Coast Battle in Beantown, which will take place in Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
