CHRISTIANBURG, Va. - UMass sophomore Josh Koppel finished in 20th place in the 3-meter springboard competition at the NCAA Zone A Diving Meet on Monday.
Koppel finished the prelims just out of the top 18, scoring a 288.75. The top 18 from the prelims advanced into the finals. He will compete in the 1-meter event on Tuesday.
On the women's side, senior Michaela Butler is headed back to college swimming and diving's biggest stage. She was second in the 1-meter with a score of 594.80. Her second-place finish advances her to the 2014 NCAA Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, held March 20-22 at the Minnesota Aquatic Center in Minneapolis.
The Dennisport, Mass. native finished fourth in the 1-meter and 14th in the 3-meter at last year's NCAA Championships, becoming the first All-American in both UMass and Atlantic 10 women's swimming & diving history.
Fellow UMass diver Mikhaila Eckhardt finished 23rd in the prelims with a score of 219.15.
Both Butler and Eckhardt are scheduled for the 3-meter event on Tuesday.
