BOSTON, Mass. - On Friday, February 28 at the New England Championship in Boston, Mass. UMass junior Courtney Kromko claimed her first gold medal as a Minutewoman. The Minutewomen are currently in fourth place after day one of the two-day championship meet largely due to their performance in the long jump.

Kromko's gold medal leap of 18-feet, 9-inches awarded the Minutewomen 10 of their 15 points on the first day New Englands. The All-Conference jumper won the event by two inches with AIC's Brittany Bryant finishing in second. She becomes the first Minutewoman to be crowned an Indoor New England Champion in the long jump in 20 years.

UMass' last Indoor New England Champion was Becky Stoyle in the triple jump a year ago. The last Minutewoman to win the long jump at New England's was Melissa Ward in 2000 when she won the outdoor championship. The junior currently sits third all-time in program history with her second place mark of 19-feet, 0.75-inches set last weekend at the 2014 Indoor Atlantic 10 Championship.

Joining Kromko in the top eight was Stoyle and Ashley Palmer. Stoyle leaped 18-feet, 3.75-inches for a sixth place finish while Palmer had the eighth best mark of the meet with a jump totaling 18-feet, 3.75-inches.

On the track the distance medley relay team also contributed to the team's success on opening day of the championship with an eighth place finish. Carly Zinner, Courtney Neves, Krista Webb and Rachel Hilliard together ran for a time of 11-minutes, 55.64-seconds.

In the 800 meter run Heather MacLean qualified for the finals finishing third in a field of 31 competitors. MacLean took just 2-minutes, 13.77-seconds to finish the race.

Also qualifying on the track was Meghan Patrolia and Brittany Green in the 60 meter hurdles. The pair finished back-to-back in sixth and seventh place respectively, both finishing in 9.03-seconds.
