Tennis Set To Face Off Against UConn

Thursday's match will be the second encounter between UMass and UConn this season, as both teams competed at the Army Invitational on Sept. 26-28. The Minutewomen swept the Huskies in the first round of the doubles A Flight when Aarzoo Malik and Arielle Griffin trumped Emma Alderman and Maxene Weinberg, 8-4. In the same round, the rookie pair of Carol Benito and Ana Yrazusta Acosta clinched an 8-6 win over UConn's Srna Stosljevic and Zaina Zaki. The Huskies did tally a Flight B doubles win in the Round of 16, 8-2, thanks to Summer Walker and Shea Flanagan.
The Minutewomen recovered their winning style into singles play when freshman, Yrazusta posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over UConn senior, Weinberg in the semifinal match of the B Flight. Chanel Glasper also rallied in the quarterfinal Flight D singles match, 0-6, 6-3, (10-8) for a come-from-behind victory.
The 2014-15 Huskies' roster boasts six returners including two seniors, one junior and three sophomores. Last season, UConn finished 8-12 overall, 2-2 at home and 0-4 in the American Athletic Conference. The Huskies also welcome two freshman to the squad, Summer Walker and Zaina Zaki out of Conyers, Georgia and West Chester, Pennsylvania, respectively.
The two teams last met for a dual match on Oct. 9, 2013 on the Mullins Center Courts. The Minutewomen rallied back from a three-match deficit to defeat the Huskies 4-3. UMass clinched the doubles point before falling three straight in singles play; Malik shifted the momentum in the No. 2 singles spot when she posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Alderman. Glasper ultimately secured the victory for the maroon and white in the second half tilt with a No. 6 singles win.
Thursday's forecast for Storrs, Connecticut predicts a sunny afternoon for tennis with a high of 60 degrees and a low of 40 degrees, with zero chance of rain.
