Woodley & Hilliard Named UMass Co-Athletes Of The Week
October 14, 2014 | Women's Cross Country
The duo will be honored on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Weekly Sports Luncheon which will be held at the UMass Football Performance Center in the Second Floor Lounge.
Woodley played a major role in the football team's 40-17 win at Kent State, while Hilliard placed fifth among 262 runners at the New England Championships.
Woodley ran for 160 yards on 23 carries and was key in the Minutemen's second half effort to pull past the Golden Flashes to snap a 12-game losing streak. The native of Miami ran for 135 of his yards in the second half including all 80 yards of UMass final offensive touchdown drive in the fourth quarter. The 160 yards were the second most for his career and marked his second career 100+ yard game. After Kent State pulled within seven, 24-17, in the third quarter, UMass went to Woodley to grind out the clock. He helped set-up a field goal in the third and scored a touchdown in the fourth. All told he helped UMass hold the ball for 13:35 of the final 22 minutes of play.
Hilliard placed fifth out of a field of 262 runners to lead the UMass women's cross country team to an 11th place finish with 317 points out of 38 teams at the New England Championships. Her fifth-place performance marked the best individual showing by a member of the Minutewomen since 2007 when Christina Derosa took fourth out of a field of 290 (17:58). The Hookstown, Pa., native improved upon her 26th-place finish at the meet a year ago, completing the 5K in 17 minutes, 44.8 seconds.
Guest speakers this week will be men's swimming and diving coach Russ Yarworth, women's swimming and diving coach Bob Newcomb, and football head coach Mark Whipple.
The luncheon will run from Noon to 1:15 PM with free parking available in Lot 11 which is adjacent to the Football Performance Center. The salad-to-dessert buffet costs $14 per person.
