Tennis Rallies For 5-2 Win Over UConn

Connecticut opened the match with veteran pair Maxene Weinberg and Srna Stosljevic taking on UMass returners Arielle Griffin and Aarzoo Malik in No. 1 doubles. The Minutewomen fell to the Huskies, 8-6, but bounced back with strong play in the No. 2 and 3 doubles matches. Newcomers Ana Yrazusta Acosta and Carol Benito clinched the No. 2 spot, 8-7, while Anna Woosley and Chanel Glasper recorded an 8-4 victory to secure the doubles point.
In singles play, the Huskies again challenged the Minutewomen in the opening matches. Stosljevic continued her winning style at the No. 1 spot, besting Griffin 6-4, 6-3. Alderman fed off of Stosljevic in No. 2 singles where she earned a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 win in a hard-fought battle against Malik.
Things turned around for the Minutewomen when freshman Yrazusta stepped up for the squad in a big way. The rookie claimed her No. 3 singles match besting UConn senior, Weinberg 6-0, 6-3. Yrazusta's momentum carried into the remaining matches where UMass trumped UConn in the No. 4, 5 and 6 spots, all with come-from-behind victories. Woosley fell early to Zaina Zaki, 3-6, but rallied back with strong 6-4, 6-1 efforts. In the No. 5 spot, Benito notched a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 score to Summer Walker, while Brittany Collens cleaned up 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 6 spot to Shea Flanagan.
The victory continues UMass' win-streak against Connecticut to 11 years, a tradition that dates back to Oct. 9, 2003 when the Minutewomen recorded a 6-1 victory at home.
UMass tennis returns to action Oct. 17 for the ITA Northeast Regionals in New Haven, Conn. The five-day tournament is the third of four that the team will face during the fall season.
