AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts field hockey team rallied for two unanswered goals during the second half after Boston College tied the game as the Minutewomen defeated the Eagles, 4-2 at Garber Field on Sunday afternoon. Brooke Sabia added two tallies for UMass while Lindsay Bowman and Molly MacDonnell secured one goal each. Izzie Delario, Hannah Prince, Mel Sutherland and Charlotte Verelst were each credited with one assist.
The Minutewomen (5-0 overall) secured a two-goal lead with back-to-back tallies from Sabia and Bowman. Sabia broke the scoreless tie on a feed from Verelst at the 12:34 mark before Bowman redirected a Prince pass at the goalmouth for the 2-0 lead only seven minutes, 26 seconds later.
Following halftime, the Eagles (4-1) responded with two goals of their own to even the score at 2-2. Emma Plasteras put home a shot with 37:33 gone by in the contest for the first BC tally. At the 52:10 mark of competition, Emily McCoy added the equalizer on a loose ball play near the cage.
UMass responded only 4:14 later with the eventual game-winning goal. MacDonnell dribbled up the East sideline of Garber Field and shifted to her right to take play into the circle. The senior from Clifton, Va., fired an attempt at the cage, with the ball deflecting off of a Boston College defender before settling into the back of the goal.
The Minutewomen extended the lead back to a pair on Sabia's second strike of the contest. With 6:33 remaining to play, Delario inserted a penalty corner to Sutherland at the top of the circle. Sutherland stopped the play and tapped it ahead to Sabia, who fired into the right side of the cage for her seventh goal of the season and second of the game.
Boston College led in shots, 24-18 and penalty corners, 12-8. UMass goalkeeper Sam Carlino provided nine saves in the cage while Hannah Prince and Lauren Allymohamed each recorded one defensive stop at the goalmouth. Leah Settipane finished with six stops in 65:31 of game action against four goals allowed. The Eagles pulled Settipane in favor of an extra field player with 4:29 to play in the game.
With the multi-goal performance, Sabia finished the week with 10 points on five goals over three games played.
UMass takes to the road to participate in the Syracuse University Invitational from Sept. 14-15. The Minutewomen will face the host-Orange (4-0), who are ranked fifth nationally, on Friday, Sept. 14 before battling Ohio State on Saturday, Sept. 15.
