AMHERST, Mass. - Five University of Massachusetts athletic programs were recognized with NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) Public Recognition Awards, as announced recently by the organization. UMass indoor and outdoor men's track and field, outdoor women's track and field, softball and women's cross country each earned the honor.
To be recognized, a squad must rank in the top 10 percent within its sport nationally according to overall team academic performance during a four-year period, ending with 2011-12. Each year, the NCAA tracks the classroom performance of student-athletes on every Division I team through the annual scorecard of academic achievement. The rate measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester.
The five Minutemen and Minutewomen programs recognized mark the second-most in department history behind only the six honored following the 2008-09 academic year. Overall, 976 teams received the APR laurel, split into 594 women's and 382 men's or mixed squads. Full APR data on all NCAA Division I programs will be released on Tuesday, June 11.
