Butler Leads Divers On First Day Of NCAA Zone Meet

AMHERST, Mass. - Michaela Butler missed an automatic qualifying bid for NCAA's by just over 16 points in the women's three-meter springboard on the first day of diving from the NCAA Zone A Meet. The redshirt junior finished fourth in the event with a total score of 611.00.

UMass had four divers participate on day one, in both the women's three-meter and the men's one-meter springboard.

Butler and Josh Koppel both qualified for the finals session. Butler took fourth, while Koppel finished in 15th with a score of 550.35.

In the preliminary round Butler stood in sixth-place with a score of 288.25. Mary Atkinson finished just outside the top-18 finals qualifiers in 20th with a score of 247.10.

On the men's one-meter, Koppel was the final qualifier taking 18th with a score of 268.45. Alexander Merkulov finished 40th in the event with a score of 219.10.

Day two action will kick off Saturday at noon, with the men's three-meter and women's one-meter prelims.
