#19 UMass Falls to #3 Maryland, 5-0

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The No. 19 UMass field hockey team faltered in a contest at No. 3 Maryland on Saturday, dropping a 5-0 decision at the Terrapin's Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. Freshman goalkeeper Sam Carlino made a career-high 15 saves to help keep the contest close before Maryland added a pair of late goals to reach the final

The Terrapins opened scoring in the fourth minute with Ali McEvoy totaling a goal following a penalty corner. Anna Dessoye added a pair of back-to-back tallies for Maryland to increase the lead to 3-0 in the 22nd minute.

Freshman Noralie Weusthuis secured the strongest UMass scoring opportunity in the 41st minute, sending an attempt on-target that was stopped in front of the cage by Maryland goalkeeper Brooke Cabrera.

The UMass attack continued to pressure the Maryland defense in the early stages of the second half, with Allie Sabia firing a shot wide at the 43:33 mark.

Jill Witmer and Lindsey Puckett each recorded a goal for Maryland in the 61st and 65th minutes, respectively.

Maryland led in shots, 28-2 and penalty corners, 11-1. Playing in her fifth collegiate game, Carlino stopped 15 shots, including a streak of four consecutive Maryland attempts following penalty corners over a two-minute span in the second half, beginning at the 47:20 mark. Cabrera and Natalie Hunter each played one half in the cage for Maryland, with Hunter earning the start.

UMass closes action at the Terrapin Invitational with a contest against American University (0-4) at Noon on Sunday, Sept. 9.
