In it's sixth overtime contest in eight games this season, the No. 25 UMass field hockey team endured a heartbreaking defeat, 3-2 to No. 12 Boston University. Alexa Sikalis and Nicole Cordero each notched one goal for the Minutewomen while Kate Heineman recorded an assist at Garber Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Terriers (6-2 overall) earned the game-deciding goal in the 86th minute of action. Rachel Coll settled a pass from Ella Gunson and placed a shot by UMass freshman goalkeeper Sam Carlino to finalize play.
The Minutewomen (3-5) notched an opening-minute goal for the second consecutive contest to break the scoreless tie only 45 seconds into the game. With the ball loose in the circle near Boston University's starting goalkeeper, Valentina Cerda, Sikalis placed a soft shot into the left side of the cage for the 1-0 lead.
BU answered in the 18th minute to knot the contest at 1-1, with Gunson sending a pass to Nicole van Oosterom near the right corner, which van Oosterom redirected on net for the equalizer.
The contest only remained tied into the 22nd minute before UMass earned its second tally of the game. Heineman fired a pass into the circle to Cordero, who settled the play and slotted a shot around Cerda for the 2-1 advantage.
BU closed regulation scoring at the 35:00 mark, as Jacinda McLeod secured a goal off of a penalty corner attempt after time in the half had expired. The play was allowed to continue past the end of the half as the penalty corner attempt was awarded prior to the end of play.
The Terriers were favored in total shots, 26-11 while also leading in on-target attempt, 11-8 and penalty corners, 13-4. Carlino made eight saves in the cage for the Minutewomen, upping her season total to 37. Cerda stopped a pair of shots before being relieved at halftime by Jess Maroney, who tallied four saves over the remainder of the contest.
UMass continues its six-game homestand with a contest on Garber Field against the University of Vermont (0-7) on Friday, Sept. 21 at 4 p.m. Admission to all home field hockey games is free.
