Ferris and Diaz-Patterson Claim UMass Weekly Honor

AMHERST, Mass. - The combo of UMass women's lacrosse attacker Katie Ferris and softball's Quianna Diaz-Patterson were named co-UMass Athletes of the Week on Monday afternoon. The former aided the Minutewomen's 2-0 effort in the past week, while the latter of the two helped Elaine Sortino's squad to a 2-2 record at the Easton Alabama Invite over the weekend.
With dominating victories over New Hampshire (17-5) and Sacred Heart (21-7), the UMass women's lacrosse team improved to 5-0 on the season this past week. Katie Ferris was a large asset to Angela McMahon's 38 goal effort over two Northeast rivals. Ferris notched five scores and ten points in the triumph over the Wildcats on Feb. 29, while boasting four goals and seven points on Mar. 4 against the Pioneers. The Carthage, N.Y. native leads UMass in goals (20), assists (12), and points (32) through five contests.
Quianna Diaz-Patterson led UMass to a pair of wins over Maryland during the weekend trip to Alabama. The Amherst, Mass. native blasted her first career grand slam and set a new school record for RBIs in a single game with eight in the 16-6 win over the Terps on Mar. 2. In the second contest, on Mar. 4, Patterson went 2-4 with two runs and one RBI in UMass' 4-2 victory. The first year shortstop posts a .289 batting average through 14 contests, with a team-high ten RBIs and 13 hits.
Both athletes will be recognized at the Weekly Sports Luncheon this Wednesday in the Campus Center at 12:15 p.m.
