Northern Illinois Runs Past UMass 63-0

DeKALB, Ill. - Jordan Lynch ran for 157 yards and threw for 191 yards to lead Northern Illinois to a 63-0 win over the UMass football team on Saturday afternoon at Huskie Stadium. Joe Colton led the UMass defense with 10 tackles and a forced fumble. Mike Cox led the offense with 81 yards rushing. The Minutemen will return to action next Saturday at Akron.
Mike Wegzyn completed 16-of-28 passes for 137 yards. Marken Michel and Rob Blanchflower led UMass in receiving with six catches (42 yards) and 4 catches (55 yards), respectively.
Lynch was relieved in the third quarter by Matt McIntosh who was 4-of-6 through the air with a touchdown and seven runs for 45 yards and two touchdowns. Tommylee Lewis had six catches for 86 yards.
Along with Colton, Perry McIntyre led UMass with eight tackles followed by seven from Khary Bailey-Smith.
Northern Illinois was led defensively by Dominique Ware who had eight tackles. The Huskies recovered three fumbles and had an interception along with four sacks.
NIU led 14-0 after the first quarter with Lynch finding Martel Moore for a nine-yard touchdown pass and then a one-yard rush by Keith Harris. Lynch was 8-for-9 through the air for 98 yards, while rushing for another 84 on the ground.
The Huskies went up 21-0 just over two minutes into the second quarter when Lynch hit Akeem Daniels for a 17-yard touchdown pass. Lynch picked up his third touchdown of the game with a 57-yard run over the left side giving him his 8th straight 100-yard rushing game of the season and putting NIU up 28-0 with 9:11 left in the first half.
Harris scored his second touchdown of the game just over six minutes later with a three-yard run over the right side giving the Huskies a 35-0 lead.
UMass took over on the ensuing drive and was able to move the ball all the way to the Northern Illinois nine-yard line thanks in part to a 15-yard facemask penalty and a pair of long receptions by Rob Blanchflower.
With first-and-goal from the nine-yard line, the Minutemen were only able to pick up a yard on a Wegzyn scramble before an incomplete pass brought up first down. UMass went for it on 4th and goal from the eight yard line, but another Wegzyn scramble was stopped for a one-yard gain turning the ball over on downs.
NIU scored midway through the third quarter to go up 42-0 thanks to a 17-yard run over the right side by Daniels for his second TD of the game.
The next UMass possession saw the Minutemen move the ball well, but a Cox fumble at the Huskie 34 yard line marked the second turnover to end a promising drive.
Northern Illinois put together a five play, 66-yard drive capped by a one-yard run by back-up quarterback Matt McIntosh up the middle for the score as the Huskies took a 49-0 lead.
UMass muffed the kick-off return giving the ball right back to NIU at the 16-yard line. McIntosh hit A.J. Sebastiano for a six-yard touchdown pass with 3:50 left in the third quarter. McIntosh added another rushing touchdown midway through the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
