No. 19 UMass Collects Fifth Consecutive Victory

October 21, 2012 | Field Hockey

Oct. 21, 2012

PHILADELPHIA - Five UMass field hockey seniors led the Minutewomen to a 5-1 victory at Saint Joseph's Ellen Ryan Field on Sunday afternoon. Senior defenders Callie Sweigart and Thando Zono and classmates Nicole Cordero, Kate Heineman and Kim Young directed the UMass offense while combining for three goals and five assists on the day. Freshman midfielder Allie Sabia and redshirt-sophomore midfielder Marisa Dunn added their first collegiate tallies during competition against the Hawks.

The Minutewomen (10-8 overall, 4-1 Atlantic 10) opened scoring only seven minutes into the contest as Sweigart found the back of the cage at the 7:30 mark. Sweigart deflected a play created following a penalty corner into the back of the cage for the senior's second goal of the season. Heineman and sophomore defender Lauren Allymohamed earned assists on the play.

Zono added her seventh goal of the season unassisted only six minutes later to double the Minutewomen lead. Zono blasted a shot by Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Kate Mitchell following a long run to develop the play, notching the mark in the 14th minute.

Sweigart, Zono and the entire UMass defense locked down on the Hawks offense over the first half, only allowing one shot while Saint Joseph's was unable to garner a penalty corner. Freshman goalkeeper Sam Carlino was there to turn aside the lone Hawks shot of the frame, doing so with 28:46 left in the half.

After Saint Joseph's (4-13, 1-4) responded with a Shannon McNeill goal in the 45th minute to open second-half scoring, Cordero earned her team-leading 12th tally of the season in the 47th minute to give the Minutewomen another two-goal advantage. On a penalty corner, Heineman inserted the play while Sweigart set up Young with the stop at the edge of the circle. The senior midfielder from Sydney, N.Y. sent a shot toward the cage, with Cordero re-directing the play for the tip-in tally.

Sabia collected her first collegiate goal at the 55:00 mark to push the lead to 4-1. Sabia fired in an attempt after Zono sent the play to secure UMass its fifth game of the season with at least four goals.

Dunn followed Sabia's lead and recorded her first collegiate goal to cap scoring in the 63rd minute. Dunn used an assist from Zono - her second of the day - as Zono sent a pass across the front of the cage to create the play for Dunn.

Over the contest, shots were 21-4 and on-target attempts finished 15-3 in favor of the Minutewomen. UMass also led in penalty corners, 9-5 while Carlino tallied a pair of saves. Mitchell finished the day with 10 stops for Saint Joseph's.

UMass continues its season on Friday, Oct. 26 when Temple visits Garber Field for a 3 p.m. contest. The Minutewomen follow with the final regular season game of the season on Sunday, Oct. 28 with 2012 Senior Day against Lock Haven at 1 p.m. Admission to all home field hockey games is free.
