FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Bowling Green scored twice in 51 seconds late in the third quarter to break-open a one-possession game and claim a 24-0 win over Massachusetts on Homecoming at Gillette Stadium Saturday.

The Minutemen remained winless on the year in seven tries overall and all four Mid-American Conference games. BGSU improved to 5-3 and 3-1.

Michael Cox led UMass with 37 yards rushing, including a 32-yard carry in the fourth quarter. Mike Wegzyn and A.J. Doyle combined to complete 13 passes on the day.

BGSU totaled 282 yards of offense with 188 through the air. Matt Schilz completed 21-of-36 passes and threw a pair of touchdowns.

The UMass defense had done a solid job holding the BGSU attack in check prior to the third-quarter scores, limiting the Falcons to 156 yards and eight first downs.

Kassan Messiah finished with a game- and career-high 16 tackles for the Minutemen. He also had one of the team's eight pass break ups. Perry McIntyre added 12 stops, including four solos.

Schilz put BGSU on the board midway through the first quarter with a screen pass to Shaun Joplin that went for 16 yards on a third-and-seven situation.

The Falcons had another chance to add to their lead late in the first half but were stopped at the UMass 26 when Darren Thellen broke up a Schiltz pass attempt on fourth down.

BGSU went to a no huddle attack on its third possession of the second half and had progress against the UMass defense. The Falcons capped off a seven play, 74-yard drive with a two-yard pass from Schilz to tight end Alex Bayer. The drive took just 2:10 and gave BGSU a 14-0 lead with 3:42 left in the third.

On the ensuing UMass possession, Dwayne Woods picked off Wegzyn and returned it 48 yards for a touchdown giving BGSU a 21-0 lead. The Minutemen had positioned themselves in good field position following a 38-yard kickoff return by Jordan Broadnax to the UMass 42.

Tyler Tate converted a 42-yard field goal for BGSU following a Doyle interception by BooBoo Gates that was returned near midfield.

UMass will return to road play next week, traveling to Vanderbilt. Kickoff at Vanderbilt Stadium in Nashville is set for 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time and the game will be televised on Fox Sports Net.
