AMHERST, Mass. - Three separate Minutewomen produced goals as the UMass field hockey team notched a 3-0 shutout of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) at Garber Field on Sunday afternoon. Senior midfielder Kim Young earned the game-winning goal while senior defender Callie Sweigart and junior forward Alyssa Ineson added security tallies to pace the Minutewomen.

Young opened scoring only 4:40 into the contest on an attacking rush that collapsed upon the VCU cage. With a cluster of players vying for control of a loose ball at the goalmouth, senior forward Nicole Cordero's initial shot attempt was tipped in near the left post by Young for the midfielder's eighth goal of the season.

After playing the remainder of the first stanza with each team owning possession and testing the opposing defense only to come up scoreless, the Minutewomen added two tallies in the final half to put the game out of reach.

Sweigart accounted for the second UMass goal of the day, using a penalty corner to double the lead. Sophomore defender Lauren Allymohamed fired an attempt on-target from inside the circle, with Sweigart in front of the cage to redirect the ball into the middle-right of the cage at the 44:06 mark.

Ineson added the final goal in the 61st minute, earning the first mark of her collegiate career in the process. Sophomore midfielder Renee Suter fed the play to Ineson, with the junior forward using a reverse-stick shot into the bottom right corner to secure the mark.

UMass led the contest in shots, 11-6 and shots on-goal, 8-3. VCU earned four penalty corners to three issued to the Minutewomen. Freshman goalkeeper Sam Carlino tallied her first collegiate shutout with three stops in the cage while Megan Botteri notched five saves for the Rams.

The Minutewomen continue their season with a trip to Philadelphia, Pa., to face a pair of Atlantic 10 opponents. First up for UMass will be a contest at La Salle on Friday, Oct. 19 before heading to Saint Joseph's for a Sunday afternoon game at Noon.
