Box Score

AMHERST, Mass. - Massachusetts got first-half goals from sophomore Josh Schwartz and freshman Jake Alvaro and then used a strong defensive effort to defeat Saint Joseph's 2-0 at Rudd Field on Friday afternoon.

Playing with the wind at their backs, the Minutemen parlayed an 8-4 advantage in shots into a pair of scores in the final 20 minutes of the opening period. Schwartz took a touch pass from Brett Canepa and dribbled into open space before firing a line drive from about 25 yards out to put UMass ahead 1-0 in the 28th minute. It was his team-leading fourth goal of the year.

Just over eight minutes later, Alvaro was the recipient of a crossing pass from Will Ellis as his one-timer high in the box put the Minutemen ahead by two.

With the wind blowing hard from the North, Saint Joseph's possessed the ball for the majority of the second half but was turned away on its only shot on goal in the stanza. UMass senior Brian Frame was credited with his fourth shutout of the year as he made three saves on the day, including a diving stop at the post in the 17th minute.

UMass (4-5-2, 1-1 Atlantic 10) improved to 4-1-1 at home as it outshot SJU 14-10. The Hawks (4-8, 0-3) did collect three corner kicks to one for the Minutemen but were unable to register any shots off those opportunities.

UMass will return to action on Sunday when it plays host to Temple. Kickoff at Rudd Field is set for 1 p.m. and admission is free.
