NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Minutewomen closed out competition yesterday, May 14 at the New England Championship Meet. As a squad, they finished in ninth out of 32 teams with a total of 41.33 points. Karen Roa had the performance of the day, as she became a New England Champion in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
Roa finished first in the steeplechase, making her a New England Champion. Her mark of 10:31.28 also bested her own UMass all-time record by 2.88 seconds. This is the second time this season that Roa set the UMass all-time mark. This mark also ranks her 31 in the NCAA East rankings, which makes her a likely candidate to participate in the NCAA Regionals.
Rachelle Bourque finished in second place in the javelin throw with a toss of 141-11 which bested her own all-time mark in the event by two feet and three inches. Also in the event, Jennifer Simao threw a mark of 114-04 and Megan Maloney threw a mark of 109-11.
Nalis Mbianda finished in third place in the shot put with a mark of 44-05.25. This throw bested her own second all time mark by 1.50 inches. Also in the event was Kaylee DeVincent, who finished in 10th with a mark of 40-03.25 and Rachelle Bourque, who finished in 12th with a mark of 39-09.25.
Gina Perno again set a personal best time in the 800 meter run with her time of 2:10.90. This is .02 seconds faster than her previous best time and also bested her own third all-time mark at UMass in the event. Also in the 800 was Deanna Julian and Erika Unger, who finished with times of 2:15.37 and 2:19.07 respectively.
Stephanie Aguguo finished in fifth place in the triple jump with a mark of 38-05.00. She currently ranks 32 in the NCAA East rankings and is likely to compete in the NCAA Regional meet.
Kayla Baldwin and Emma Riedel finished in 13th and 15th place in the 100 meter dash respectively. Baldwin had a time of 12.71 and Riedel had a time of 12.73.
Michelle Jenssen finished 16th in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:06.24, while Andrea Saccardo finished 22nd in the event with a time of 1:08.09.
Katherine Finnegan finished in sixth place in the long jump with a leap of 17-09.50. Chrissy Silvar finished in sixth place in the pole vault with a mark of 11-05.75, which bested her own fifth all time mark at UMass.
The UMass 4x400 meter relay team finished in eighth place with a time of 3:54.46.
Sarah Plesh took 11th in the high jump, clearing a height of 5-03.00. Kaylee DeVincent finished 14th in the discus throw with a mark of 120-04.
The next meet that the Minutewomen could appear in is the NCAA Regional Meet, which would begin this Thursday, May 26.
