Minutewomen Finish Second At AIC Invitational

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The UMass women's track and field team finished in second place at the AIC Invitational on Saturday, April 2 and scored 199 team points. The Minutewomen had six first place finishes at the meet in the 1500 meter run, the 3000 meter steeplechase, the high jump, the pole vault, the long jump, and the triple jump.

Gina Perno finished in first place in the 1500 meter relay with a time of 4:42.59 to start off her senior outdoor season. Fellow senior Stephanie Aguguo also placed first in her event, the triple jump, with a mark of 38-00.75. Rounding out the top senior performances is Jenelle Denehy, who placed first in the pole vault with a mark of 10-00.00. Alyssa Cummings finished second in the pole vault with a mark of 9-00.25.

The other three first place finishes all came from sophomores, with Rebecca Banker in the high jump with a mark of 5-02.00, Danielle Allocco in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 12:36.52 and Katherine Finnegan in the long jump with a mark of 16-05.00.

UMass placed second in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 4:07.34. The team consisted of Meghan Leahy, Deanna Julian, Michelle Jenssen, and Erika Unger. Also of note was the 400 meter Hurdles, where UMass took second, third, fifth, and sixth place. Leading the way was Sarah Bitterman, who finished with a time of 1:08.58.

Michelle Jenssen, Deanna Julian, Lauren Stocker, and Kristin Darling all had second place finishes in their respective events. Jenssen had a time of 59.66 in the 400 meter dash, Julian had a time of 2:20.89 in the 800 meter run, Stocker had a time of 18:28.30 in the 5000 meter run, and Darling had a time of 38:54.99 in the 10000 meter run.

Rounding out the day was Kaylee DeVincent, who performed well in the field events. She placed third in both the shot put and the discus throw, with marks of 37-06.00 and 114-01.75 respectively. She also had a fourth place finish in the hammer throw with a mark of 128-00.00.

Join the Minutewomen next Saturday, April 9 for the UMass home opener. The UMass Invitational will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the UMass Track and Field Complex.
