PRINCETON, N.J. - The UMass women's track and field team finished up competition at the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J. on Saturday with no team score kept. In day one of the meet, Karen Roa broke the school all-time record in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:34.16.
Nalis Mbianda made her mark at the meet, placing third in the shot put with a toss of 45-03.75. This throw also gives her the second all-time mark at UMass, just behind Lisa Wilson's all-time mark of 48-00.75. Nalis previously held the third all-time mark in the shot put with a throw of 44-4.25, which she set in last years outdoor season.
In other field events, Rachelle Bourque finished seventh in the javelin throw with a mark of 127-11. She also placed 11th in the shot put, with a mark of 40-05.50. Kaylee DeVincent finished 20th in the discus throw, tossing it 109-02.
The Minutewomen had an impressive showing in the 800 meter run with four runners in the top 20. Gina Perno finished in ninth with a time of 2:14.69 and right behind her in 10th place was Claire Pettit with a time of 2:15.87. Erika Unger and Deanna Julian came in 12th and 13th place respectively, and both had personal best times on the season. Unger had a time of 2:16.33 and Julian had a time of 2:17.12.
Also with a personal best time was Sarah Bitterman in the 400 meter hurdles. She finished in 20th place with a time of 1:05.16. Behind her was Michelle Jenssen in 26th place with a time of 1:06.38. Sarah Plesh tested out her hurdling skills in the 100 meter hurdles, and finished with a time of 17.17.
The 4x400 meter relay team, made up of Perno, Unger, Bitterman, and Jenssen, finished in 12th with a time of 3:54.92. Melody Lam placed 23rd in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:50.20, and Chrissy Silvar finished 15th in the pole vault, clearing a height of 10-10.00.
The Minutewomen are back in action next week at home for the UMass Pre-Conference Meet at the UMass Track and Field Complex at 11:30 a.m.
