CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Philip Samuelsson scored two goals to lead #1 Boston College to a 5-0 win over the UMass hockey team Friday night at Conte Forum. The Eagles (19-6-0, 15-5-0 HEA) held a 2-0 edge heading into the third period before burying three more scores in the final frame. Paul Dainton made 35 saves for the Minutemen (6-14-4, 5-9-4 HEA), including 28 through two periods, before being replaced by Jeff Teglia late in the third period. The Mass Attack will head to North Andover tomorrow night for a matchup with Merrimack at 7 PM.
Friday's loss keeps the Minutemen in seventh place in the Hockey East standings, with Providence nipping at the heels just three points behind in eighth. Boston College held a 43-16 edge in shots for the game, and led 30-10 through 40 minutes of play. Massachusetts was 0-for-4 on the power play while the Eagles went 1-for-4 on the man advantage and held a slight lead in the faceoff circle, winning 32-of-58 draws.
Dainton was immense between the pipes for the Minutemen throughout the first period as the Eagles outshot UMass 20-6. The Massachusetts captain made two back-to-back saves to first rob Bill Arnold on a shot from the left side, and then Barry Almeida immediately after with a sprawling save along the goal line to deny Almeida of his fourth goal of the season.
When Tommy Cross was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for contact to the head elbowing following an open ice hit on Marc Concannon, the Mass Attack went on a full two-minute five-on-three skating advantage. The Minutemen looked to setup Adam Phillips for one-timers at the point against the nation's top-ranked penalty killing squad, and Phillips nearly cashed in when he rang a slapshot off the crossbar with 10:45 left in the period.
Joe Whitney was finally able to get one past Dainton as Boston College returned to full strength with 4:27 left in the frame. Whitney received a pass from Brian Gibbons and skated in on Dainton from the left side. Whitney shifted the puck over to his backhand and snuck a changeup through Dainton's pads for his fourth goal of the year.
The Eagles continued to pepper Dainton with shots during the second period, holding a 10-4 edge and taking a two-goal lead with under three minutes to play in the frame. Boston College went on the power play early on in the stanza, but Dainton and the UMass defense were able to weather the storm to kill off the man advantage. Doug Kublin made a big play during the penalty kill when he went down to block a shot from Cam Atkinson when Dainton was caught behind the net.
The Eagles made it 2-0 with 2:03 left in the period when Samuelsson took a feed from Almeida and roofed a shot top corner over the left shoulder of Dainton for his second goal of the season.
Boston College added three more scores during the third period, the first coming with the Eagles on the power play 3:16 into the frame. Samuelsson netted his second goal of the night when he took a pass from Brian Dumoulin at the point, settled the puck, then fired a shot on goal that got by a screened Dainton.
The Eagles made it 4-0 with 5:42 left in regulation off a faceoff as Gibbons took a spin-around shot from just inside the point that was tipped in by Paul Carey for his 11th goal of the year, prompting Head Coach Don Cahoon to replace Dainton with Teglia. Boston College kept its foot on the gas pedal, however, as Atkinson and Whitney connected on a give-and-go ending with Atkinson's 20th goal of the year on a tap in from in front of the net just 1:25 after the Carey tally.
