Perno Finishes First In 1000 Prelim At New Englands

BOSTON, Mass. - Members of the UMass women's track and field team finished up their first day at the New England Championships. The Minutewomen are currently 14th out of 25 teams and have five points, with the performance of the day coming from Gina Perno in the 1000 meter run.
Perno took first place in the 1000 meter run preliminaries with a time of 2:54.12 on day one, which will advance her to the finals on day two.
The 500 meter run was a big event for the Minutewomen, who took third, fourth, and fifth place. Leading the way was Deanna Julian with a time of 1:16.10, which is a personal best time and also the fifth best all-time mark at UMass. Finishing just after Julian were Sarah Bittermann, with a time of 1:16.19 (PR), and Michelle Jenssen with a time of 1:16.34.
The distance medley relay team also scored with a fifth-place finish and a time of 12:14.19. The team was made up of Claire Pettit, Jenssen, Julian, and Elizabeth Fisk.
The Minutewomen continue competition today, Saturday, Feb. 26, in Boston, Mass.
