Second Half Goals Lift W. Soccer Over GW, 2-0

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The UMass women's soccer team used a pair of second half goals to pick up its sixth Atlantic 10 victory of the season, a 2-0 win over George Washington on Friday afternoon. With the win, the Minutewomen (12-3-2, 6-1-1 A-10) are guaranteed to finish no lower than fourth in the A-10 standings and can clinch a first round bye in the A-10 tournament with a victory at Richmond on Sunday. The Colonials fall to 5-11-2, 2-4-2 in conference play, following the loss.
After a scoreless first half that saw George Washington out-shoot UMass, 6-4, the Minutewomen broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute. Off a restart, freshman Moa Mattsson played the ball short behind the wall to sophomore Cecilia Jensen. Jensen then sent a pass over to freshman Tori Sousa that she tapped in from two yards out for her third of the season.
UMass later added some insurance at 81:54. Senior Erin McGaffigan headed in a pass from classmate Julie Morrissey for her second tally of the year. Morrissey's assist extended her streak to three straight games with at least one point.
The teams finished even in shots, 13-13, while the Colonials held a slight edge in corner kicks, 4-3. Fouls were 8-5, against GW.
In net junior goalkeeper Emily Cota collected her ninth shutout of the season for the Minutewomen and made four saves, tying her for 10th on the program's single season shutouts list. She is the first player to crack the top-10 since 1996. Netminder Lindsey Rowe turned aside four shots for the Colonials, as well.
UMass will be back in action on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 30, playing the Atlantic 10 regular season finale at Richmond. Kick off is slated for 1 p.m.
