ITA Regionals Prove To Be Solid Test For Tennis

NEW HAVEN, CONN. - The UMass tennis team wrapped up competition at the ITA Division I Regional Northeast Championship this Saturday at Yale. UMass was led by the double's pairing of Yuliana Motyl and Chantal Swiszcz who advanced to the Round of 16 after recording wins in the first two rounds of the tournament. Also performing well was Julia Comas, who won her first round match in the main draw of singles before falling in the second round to the #11 seed.
In the first round, Motyl and Swiszcz defeated Penn's #4 seeded pairing of Sol Eskenaz and Jamie Yapp-Shing 9-7. The two went on to top Jillian Santos and Missy Edelblum from Binghamton 8-4 before falling to Cornell's #9 seed Christine Ordway and Sarah O'Neil 8-6 in the Round of 16. Motyl and Swiszcz now move to 4-2 in tournament play.
In the main singles draw, Julia Comas defeated Brown's Ariel Caldwell 6-3, 6-2. In the second round, Comas lost to the #11 seed Blair Seideman from Yale 6-1, 6-1.
Also in the main singles draw was Jessica Podlofsky who was defeated by Monica Mikal from Boston University 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4.
The tournament proved to be a solid test for the Minutewomen as they now head to their final fall tournament of the season at Dartmouth on Friday, November 4 for the Big Green Invitational.
