Julian Leads The Way In New York

NEW YORK, N.Y. - The UMass women's track and field team competed in the Great Dane Invitational this Friday taking 11th place out of the 18 teams in attendance. The Minutewomen finished the meet with 31 points and had five athletes qualify for the New England Championships at the end of the season.
Junior Karen Roa paved the way with a first place finish qualifying for both the ECAC and New England Championships in the 3000 meters (9:56.77). Entering the record books in the 500 meters was fellow junior Deanna Julian who posted a time of 1:16.17, good for fifth all-time at UMass. The time landed Julian an eighth place finish and qualified her for the New England Championships.
Senior Gina Perno notched a fourth place finish in the 800 meters (2:14.31), qualifying for both the New England and ECAC Championships. Claire Pettit took eighth in the event (2:17.42) and also qualified for the New England Championship meet.
Nalis Mbianda (shot put, 43-09.75) and Elizabeth Fisk (mile, 5:08.87) placed seventh in their respective events while Stephanie Aguguo took third place in the triple jump (38-04.25).
Rounding out the qualifiers for the New England Championships was Michelle Jenssen who finished 10th in the 400 meters (58.57).
