Day One Of Eastern Collegiate Invitational Complete

WEST POINT, N.Y. - Day one of the season-opening Eastern Collegiate Invitational at Army is in the books with three UMass tennis singles players and one doubles team advancing to the third round. Julia Comas (Flight B singles), Candynce Boney (Flight C singles), and Jessica Podlofsky (Flight D singles) all advanced to Saturday's third round action. In Flight B doubles action, Kaitlyn Carpenter and Jocelyn Providence advanced to the third round as well.
After receiving a first-round bye, Comas dropped just one game in a straight-sets victory over Holy Cross' Emily Marr, 6-1; 6-0.
In Flight C, Boney received a first-round bye as well and dispatched of Lehigh's Patricia Muthing, 6-3; 7-6 (3), to reach Saturday's third round.
Podlofsky won a pair of singles matches in Flight D to reach the third round. She defeated Bryant's May Vickers, 6-3; 6-0, before topping UConn's Lucy Nutting, 6-0; 6-2.
The Flight B doubles team of Carpenter and Providence defeated the Army team of Kiser and Vollmer in the second round after receiving a first-round bye.
In Flight A singles, freshman Yuliana Motyl got a bye in the first round before falling to Elena Ivanova of Hofstra, 6-4; 6-2.
The UMass Flight A doubles team of Tanisha Hodgson and Chantal Swiszcz fell to Bucknell's team of Iepuras and Vidrascu, 8-6, after getting a bye in the first round.
Gabby Jannotta won her opening round Flight D singles match, 6-1; 6-2, over NJIT's Megan Guidry before falling to West Virginia's Melis Tanik, 6-0; 6-2 in the second round.
Play continues at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational on Saturday before concluding on Monday.
