AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts women's tennis team will open up the fall season this weekend (Sept. 25-27) at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational Tournament hosted by Army. The Minutewomen are one of 30 teams from across the East Coast competing in the tournament. With eight returning players the Minutewomen are hoping to start the season off strong.

Graduating only one senior from last year the Minutewomen are ready to kick off the 2010-2011 season with an experienced core returning, and three freshmen who are ready to make an impact right away.

Leading the team at Flight A Singles is freshman Yuliana Motyl from Toronto, Ont. who was ranked 1000 in the WTA Rankings.

Competing in Flight B Singles is sophomore Julia Comas (17-7 in 2009), who was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team last season.

Senior Candynce Boney (7-2 at second singles and 9-4 at third singles in 2009) who was also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team last season will compete in Flight C Singles along with freshman Clara Matias from Barcelona, Spain who was ranked in the top 45 in Spain.

Flight D Singles will feature freshmen Jessica Podlofsky from Port Washington, N.Y. and junior Gabriella Jannotta.

In the doubles phase of the invitational, senior Tanisha Hodgson and sophomore Chantal Swiszcz will play in the Flight A Doubles. They will be followed in Flight B doubles by sophomore Jocelyn Providence (11-8 in 2009) and senior Kaitlyn Carpenter (14-11 in 2009).

Last year's Eastern Collegiate Invitational highlights: Last year the Minutewomen had a strong showing at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational. The highlight of the weekend came from the doubles team of Candynce Boney and Maude Lecluyse who won the No. 1 doubles title. Also in the doubles competition, Tanisha Hodgson and Jocelyn Providence came back after failing in a close first round matchup to win the second doubles consolation bracket. Singles was highlighted by three players reaching the main draw semifinals all falling to the eventual champions.

Looking ahead: After this weekend's Invitational at Army the Minutewomen will return home to host Holy Cross on September 30th at 1:30 pm and Fordham on October 1st at 12:00 pm.
