Minutemen On Fire In Season Opener
September 18, 2010 | Men's Cross Country
Sept. 18, 2010
AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's cross cross country team wasted no time in proving why they were last year's A-10 runner up, as the team notched a first place finish on Saturday morning. At the sole home meet of the season, the huge fan outpouring helped the Minutemen to score 47 points, edging out UConn with 51 points.
Leading the way for the Minutemen were seniors Andrew Mulvaney and Daniel Barry. Mulvaney, who trailed Barry most of the race, ultimately surpassed his teammate to finish fourth overall in 25:48. Barry was able to cross the line right after Mulvaney at 25:51, good enough for fifth place.
Next up for UMass were two of the stronger competitors on the team in the forms of Scott VanderMolen and Sonny Gamble. The duo took eighth and 13th respectively, with times of 26:04 and 26:18.
Rounding out the senior dominated meet was Robert Deegan, as the Pembroke, Mass. native took fifth on the team and 17th overall with a time of 26:37. Two of Coach Ken O'Brien's freshmen recruits (Dan Joyce, Patrick McGowan) also participated in their first collegiate meet on Saturday.
The Minutemen will be back in action on October 1, as the squad heads to Bethlehem, PA for the annual Paul Short Invitational.
