DEDHAM, Mass. - The UMass women's track and field team wrapped up a phenomenal day one of competition at the New England Championships on Friday. Leading UMass was freshman Rachelle Bourque, who took the New England Championship title in the javelin. Bourque's championship throw of 135-04 comes a week after she set the UMass school record in the event at the Atlantic 10 Championships. Senior Lisa Wilson also added to the outstanding day by setting a school record in the hammer throw, placing fourth with a mark of 185-01. The toss shattered the previous record of 176-02 that Wilson set at the UNH Pre-Conference Meet (4/24).

Three other athletes placed for the Minutewomen in the field events. Freshman Nicole Pompei took fourth overall in the pole vault with a mark of 11-05.75. In the long jump, Katherine Finnegan placed fourth and Ida Okkonen placed fifth with respective marks of 17-10.75 and 17-08.75.

For five of the track events, the preliminary rounds were held on day one. Freshmen athletes Emma Riedel and Michelle Jenssen both qualified for the final heats of their respective events. Riedel posted a time of 12.50 and a fifth place finish in the 100 meters while Jenssen set a time of 58.07 and a sixth place finish in the 400 meters.

Day two of competition will commence Saturday, May 8 at 10:00 a.m.
