Tennis Welcomes Class For 2010-11

UMass tennis head coach Judy Dixon has brought in three newcomers for the class of 2010-11. Yuliana Motyl comes to the Minutewomen from Toronto, Clara Matias is a product of Barcelona, Spain, and Jessica Podlofsky joins the team from Port Washington, N.Y. All three look to contribute and put UMass into contention for an A-10 title next season.
"Overall, we are extremely happy about this class," said Dixon. "We feel it is the best class that UMass has had with a trio of kids that will make an impact right away and put us in contention for an A-10 Title in 2010-2011."
Here are coach Dixon's comments on all three recruits:
Yuliana Motyl from Toronto, Ontario
She has been ranked as high as 511th on the International Tennis
Federation (ITF) world junior rankings. She brings a lot of experience and
has played a lot of matches against top competition from the US and
the world. Motyl has been ranked as high as 1000th in the WTA rankings. She is a match tough player that we expect to play at the top of the lineup in both singles
and doubles.
Clara Matias from Barcelona, Spain
She has been ranked as high as 48th in the Spanish National Ranking. She has
won several state and regional championships. Matias attended the summer 2006
advance training camp at Harvard. She's a consistent baseliner that's at a
similar ranking and level to standout freshman Julia Comas. Also
expected to make an impact in the top of the lineup in singles and
contribute in doubles.
Jessica Podlofsky from Port Washington, N.Y.
She is currently ranked 154th on the tennis recruiting national rankings
for the 2010 class. She is ranked 24th in the Mid-Atlantic and 10th in the state of New York. Podlofsky is listed as a 3-star player at the moment, and has very good results against 4-star players, so she is up to that level. An aggresive baseliner that is very tough mentally, she will definitely be a tough out for anyone. We
expect her to play in the bottom part of the lineup as a freshman. She
has a great work ethic and will continue to get better and move up in
the lineup as her game develops.
