Charlotte Takes Game Three, 7-1, Over Baseball

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The UMass baseball team received a strong outing from its bullpen, but Charlotte scored runs in each of the first three innings to take game three, 7-1 over the Minutemen. Following the setback, UMass is now 2-16 overall and 1-5 in the Atlantic 10, while the 49ers remain perfect in conference play at 6-0 and are now 19-6 overall.
Charlotte posted two runs in the first with a pair of two-out hits. Kevin Gillespie knocked in Cory Tilton, who reached on a fielder's choice, with an RBI single to left. Miguel Rodriguez followed with a double to right that plated Ryan Rivers.
The 49ers added three more runs in the bottom of the second. Zane Williams led off with a double and scored on an error on the same play. The next batter, Corey Shaylor, reached base with an infield hit and Justin Wilson sent a single through the right side. Cory Tilton drew a walk to load the bases, setting up a two-RBI single by Mike Perkins that sent in Shaylor and Wilson.
Then in the third, Charlotte pushed its advantage to 6-0. Justin Roland opened up the frame with a single down the left field line and later crossed the plate on a single to center by Wilson.
Roland had another leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth and went on to score the 49ers' seventh and final run of the afternoon on a single to left center by Shaylor.
In relief of UMass starter Mike Gedman, sophomores Ben Hart and Glen Misho pitched the remaining 3.1 innings of the contest without allowing a hit.
The Minutemen scored their lone run of the afternoon with two down in the top of the eighth. Freshman Ryan Cusick poked a single through the right side, stole second and came home on a double to left center by junior Eric Fredette.
Mike Gedman threw 4.2 innings and took the loss (1-2) after giving up seven runs, six earned, on 13 hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Chad Rothlin (3-1) picked up the victory for Charlotte as he worked 7.2 innings and allowed one run on four hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
Fredette tallied two of UMass' five hits, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Williams (2-for-2), Wilson (2-for-3), Roland (2-for-3), Gillespie (2-for-4) and Shaylor (2-for-4) each had multiple hits for the 49ers. Perkins contributed two RBI and Roland scored twice.
The Minutemen will return to action on Tuesday, Apr. 6, when the squad will travel to Storrs, Conn., for a 3 p.m. contest at UConn.
