Pompei Vaults Into Record Books At UConn

STORRS, Conn. - In the team's opening meet of the outdoor season, the UMass women's track and field team took third place out of six teams at the UConn Invitational. Nicole Pompei and Lisa Wilson led UMass, with Pompei winning the pole vault and Wilson qualifying for the New England Championships in three different events.
Coming off of an extremely successful indoor season, freshman Nicole Pompei kept her momentum going by winning the pole vault with a mark of 11-05.75. The vault qualifies Pompei for the New England Championships and now puts her fourth all-time at UMass in the event.
Lisa Wilson qualified for the New England Championships in the shot put (43-02.25), discus (139-03), and hammer throw (167-01) at Saturday's meet. Wilson also qualified for the ECAC Championships with her fourth place mark in the hammer throw, and took fifth place in both the shot put and discus.
Six other athletes qualified for the New England Championships at the UConn meet. Brittany Bakanowski finished third and posted a time of 1:05.09 in the 400 meter hurdles. Courtney Baldwin added to her strong freshman campaign with a second place finish in the 1500 meter run (4:37.43). In the triple jump, junior Stephanie Aguguo grabbed fifth place with a mark of 37-00.25.
Rounding out the New England qualifiers were Gina Perno, Rachelle Bourque, and Nalis Mbianda. Perno set a qualifying mark in the 800 meters with a time of 2:14.05 and a fourth place finish. Bourque's mark of 128-03 in the javelin and Mbianda's mark of 41-09.75 in the shot put will send them both to the New England meet. Both athletes placed sixth in their respective events at the UConn Invite.
The Minutewomen will be back in Amherst Saturday, Apr. 10 at 11:30 a.m. for the UMass Nine-Way Meet. Be sure to come down to the UMass Track and Field Complex to see the men and women compete.
