Minutewomen Finish 5th At A-10 Tournament

ST. LOUIS, MO - The UMass women's tennis team came back from down, 3-1, to beat St. Louis, 4-3, and tie for fifth-place overall at the 2010 Atlantic 10 tournament on Saturday afternoon in St. Louis, Mo. The Minutewomen improved on their sixth-place finish in 2009, when they fell to St. Louis in the fifth-place game. UMass tied with number one overall seed, Xavier, for fifth with the comeback victory over the host Billikens, concluding their season with a 14-8 record in dual matches.
UMass was able to take the all-important doubles point to take the 1-0 advantage. Jocelyn Providence and Kaitlyn Carpenter earned the first victory, defeating Mia Elmore and Sarah Septien, 8-3. After St. Louis was able to take a win at number two doubles, Candynce Boney and Maude Lecluyse were able to edge Casey Miller and Jenny Nalepa, 9-7, to clinch the point.
The Billikens came back to take the lead in singles, winning three of the top four spots, as Boney grabbed the lone win at number two singles over Miller, 6-4, 6-0. Trailing, 3-2, in the match, the Minutewomen needed wins at both the fifth and sixth singles slots to get the win. Carpenter got it started with a win over Kasia Tomalak, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1 to tie the match at three apiece. Providence, a freshman, would then clinch the match for UMass, beating Elmore in three sets, 7-6, 2-6, 10-6.
The match concluded the season for the Minutewomen, who finished of the year, 14-8 overall, and fifth in the conference.
