ST. LOUIS, MO - After advancing through the first round of the 2010 Atlantic 10 tournament with a win over St. Joe's, the UMass women's tennis team fell to Temple in the quarterfinals, 4-1, Friday night in St. Louis, Mo. The loss sends the Minutewomen into the consolation bracket, where they will take on St. Louis Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
Temple was able to jump out to the early advantage by winning the doubles point, sweeping all three doubles matches to grab a, 1-0, lead. UMass made it difficult on the Owls, as Jocelyn Providence and Kaitlyn Carpenter fell, 8-6, to Theresa Stangl and May Johnson, while Josephine Bergman and Katharina Mittag were able to clinch the point with a win over Candynce Boney and Maude Lecluyse at first doubles.
Freshman Julia Comas continued her consistent play at the top spot for UMass, winning yet another match at first singles, 6-2, 6-2, over Bergman. That would be the lone UMass point of the match, however, as Stangl, Johnson and Mittag swept fourth, fifth, and sixth singles to go on to the victory. Temple will take on second-seeded Richmond in the semifinals on Saturday.
UMass will have a chance to fight for fifth place, beginning this afternoon with a match against St. Louis starting at 3:30 p.m.
