CHARLESTON, S.C. - The UMass women's tennis team snapped a five-match losing streak with a, 6-1, victory over Presbyterian on Thursday afternoon in the finale of their spring break trip to Charleston, S.C. The Minutewomen improved to 8-6 on the season while going 1-2 on their trip as they get ready to return to the northeast.
The team came out with a lot of fire after losing the first two matches of their trip, sweeping all three doubles matches to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead. Candynce Boney and Maude Lecluyse led the team in first doubles with a gritty, 8-6, victory of Heather Heusel and Paige Oelke. Julia Comas and Tanisha Hodgson would follow that with their first win as a doubles team, defeating Olivia McMillan and Virginia Waldron, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles. Finishing up the sweep, Jocelyn Providence and Kaitlyn Carpenter took down Megan Davis and Lindsey Krause, 8-5.
UMass continued their dominance in singles play, with victories in five of the six matches to come out with the, 6-1, win. Jocelyn Providence played a thrilling match at No. 6 singles against Cara Caruso, as she came back after dropping the first set, 5-7, to win the next two sets, 6-4, 10-8. Candynce Boney was impressive at No. 2 singles with a, 6-0, 6-0, win against McMillan, improving her record to 2-0 at the No. 2 position this season.
Freshman Julia Comas earned her first win in the No. 1 singles spot, beating Heusel, 6-4,- 6-3. Hodgson and Carpenter also earned big victories, with Hodgson winning at No. 3 singles and Kaitlyn Carpenter at No. 5.
"It was good for us to finish this trip with a win. We played three very tough teams and we feel that these kind of matches are really making us match tough as we move forward and get prepared for the final stretch of our season finishing at A-10's," said head coach Judy Dixon.
UMass returns to the northeast on Saturday, March 27 when they play a road match at NJIT (10 a.m.).
