CHARLESTON, S.C. - Playing their second of three matches on their spring break trip, the UMass women's tennis team fell to No. 58 College of Charleston, 6-0, in a rain-shortened match Wednesday afternoon. The two teams played just the singles matches, skipping the doubles matches because of the poor weather. It was the second consecutive match against a ranked opponent for the Minutewomen, who fell to #65 Charleston Southern on Tuesday.
The Minutewomen jumped out to a 7-1 start on the year, but have since dropped five-straight matches to move their record to 7-6. Four of those five losses have come against ranked opponents, as UMass has played one of their toughest schedules of all-time. The Cougars improved their record to 11-8 on the year.
Caroline Newman set the tone for College of Charleston with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Tanisha Hodgson at No. 3 singles to give the Cougars to quick, 1-0, advantage. Holly Dowse and Emma Hayman would follow suit at first and second singles respectively, knocking-off Julia Comas and Candynce Boney.
Senior captain Maude Lecluyse played the most competitive match of the day, claiming the first set, 6-4, over Laura Borza at No. 4 singles, before falling in the next set, 6-0, and losing the tiebreaker, 10-5. Jocelyn Providence also played well at sixth singles, forcing Keely Mulligan into a tiebreak in the first set, but was defeated, 7-5, 6-2.
UMass will conclude its trip on Thursday with a match against Presbyterian (2 p.m.).
