CHARLESTON, S.C. - The UMass women's tennis team kicked off its spring break road trip on Tuesday afternoon, falling to No. 65 Charleston Southern, 5-2. The loss was the fourth-straight for UMass, who fell to 7-5 on the year. The Buccaneers improved their record to a perfect 8-0, moving them into the ITA national poll for the first time this year.
Four of the five Minutewomen losses have come to ranked opponents, as the squad has played one of its toughest schedules of all time. The host Buccaneers jumped out to a quick, 1-0, lead in the match by taking all three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Andrea Schutte and Angie Torres were able to get past Candynce Boney and Maude Lecluyse, 8-4, to start the day at No. 1 singles.
Olga Mackhova and Marija Dzakovic continued the momentum with an 8-4 win of their own over Julia Comas and Magdalena Ploch, while Susita Das and Brooke Pletcher finished off the sweep at number three doubles with an 8-2 win over Tanisha Hodgson and Jocelyn Providence.
The Minutewomen claimed their only two victories at third and sixth singles, while the Buccaneers won the other four singles matches to take the, 5-2, win. Boney played a three-set thriller with Pletcher, taking the match, 3-6, 6-3, 10-7 in a tiebreak. Providence would come up with the second win, cruising to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Susita.
The schedule does not get any easier for UMass, as they will take on No. 58 College of Charleston on Wednesday afternoon (2 p.m.).
