Quick, Team USA Earn Silver At Winter Olympics

VANCOUVER, B.C. - After a dramatic game-tying effort with just 25 seconds remaining in regulation, the U.S. men's ice hockey team fell to Canada 3-2 in overtime in the Winter Olympics Gold Medal Game on Sunday afternoon. Former UMass All-American Jon Quick became the third Minuteman to earn Silver in a Winter Olympic Games.
Quick joined Thomas Pock, Justin McCarthy and John Lyons to represent the UMass hockey program in the Winter Olympics. Pock played for Austria in the 2002 Winter Olympics (Salt Lake City), while McCarthy and Lyons played for the United States in the 1924 Chamonix, France Winter Olympics (the first Winter Olympic games). In the 1924 Olympics, McCarthy and Lyons helped the United States earn Silver as well.

VANCOUVER, B.C. - Zach Parise (Prior Lake, Minn./New Jersey Devils/Univ. of North Dakota) scored the game-tying goal with 25 seconds left in regulation, but the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team fell to Canada, 3-2, in overtime here this afternoon in the gold-medal game of the XXI Olympic Winter Games. Team USA claimed its second silver medal in the past three Olympic Winter Games (2002).
"It was tough to lose that way in overtime, but I couldn't have asked for anything more from the team," said Ron Wilson, Team USA head coach. "Their character was great throughout the tournament. It was a great game today and hockey in general wins."
Canada netted the game's first two goals, with Jonathan Toews opening the scoring at 12:50 of the opening frame and Corey Perry extending Canada's lead to 2-0 at 7:13 of the second period.
Team USA responded with Ryan Kesler's (Livonia, Mich./Vancouver Canucks/The Ohio State Univ.) second goal of the tournament to cut the lead in half at 12:44 of the middle frame. After collecting the puck in Team USA's defensive zone, Kesler skated down the middle of the ice before passing to Patrick Kane (Buffalo, N.Y./Chicago Blackhawks) just inside the offensive blue line. With U.S. netminder Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich./Buffalo Sabres/Michigan State Univ.) pulled in favor of six skaters, Parise tied the game with 25 seconds remaining in regulation. Joe Pavelski (Plover, Wis./San Jose Sharks/Univ. of Wisconsin) started the play in the right corner and fired a shot toward the net that deflected off a player in front before finding Kane at the top of the right circle. Kane's shot attempt deflected off Jamie Langenbrunner's (Cloquet, Minn./New Jersey Devils) skate and was stopped by Luongo before Parise banged the rebound in for his fourth goal of the tournament.
In overtime, Canada's Sidney Crosby scored the gold medal-winning goal at 7:40.
Miller turned aside 36 shots faced as the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team claimed its 11th total Olympic Winter Games medal.
NOTES:Ryan Miller was named the most valuable player of the tournament by both the tournament directorate and the media. He also ended the tournament with a U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team record for best goals-against average (1.35). The record was previously held by Jim Craig (1980/2.14) ... Brian Rafalski was named the best defenseman by the directorate ... Miller, Rafalski and Zach Parise were named to the media all-star team ...
