NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Facing one of their toughest tests of the season, the UMass tennis team fell to nationally ranked Yale, 7-0 Friday night in New Haven, Conn. The Bulldogs, ranked 44th in the nation, swept the singles competition and won the doubles point, 2-1, despite a great effort from the UMass squad.
The Minutewomen grabbed one victory on the night, as Tanish Hodgson and Jocelyn Providence combined to defeat Stevi Petrelli and Silia DeFelippis in doubles competition, 7-4. Yale took the other two doubles matches, as Vicky Brook and Lindsay Clark knocked off Candynce Boney and Maude Lecluyse, 8-5, while Jessica Rhee and Stephanie Kent beat Julia Comas and Magdalena Ploch, 8-2.
In singles matches, Ploch, who came into the match ranked No. 10 in the region, had a tough contest with Stephanie Kent, ranked No. 9 in the Northeast. Kent was able to take the match, 6-2, 7-5, but not without a great effort put forth by Ploch. Boney also played very well, losing to Jessica Rhee in number three singles in a tiebreaker, 6-1, 5-7 (10-6).
"I'm very pleased with how the team played tonight. Yale is a tough team and we responded with a great effort. If we continue to fight this hard all season, it will be a great year. The team should feel very good going into the match with a tough Siena team tomorrow," said head coach Judy Dixon.
The Minutewomen will be back in action with their spring home opener tomorrow afternoon at the Bay Road Tennis Club at 1 p.m.
