Men And Women Finish Third At Terrier Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. - The UMass men's and women's swim teams both took third at the Terrier Invitational in Boston this weekend. The men finished behind host team BU and Boston College and they were followed by Yale, Drexel and Holy Cross. The women finished behind BU and Northeastern and finished ahead of UNH, Yale, Boston College, Drexel and Holy Cross.

The Minutemen started day two off with a second-place finish in 200 Medley relay by Max Butler, Peter Sacco, Christopher Howard and Trevor Ziegler with a time of 1:32.85. Along with the 200 Medley relay the men grabbed six top-5 finishes on the day. Joey Sbordon took fourth in the 400 IM (4:03.44), Michael DiMarco finished fifth in the 100 Breast (58.16), Max Butler took second in the 100 Back (51.01) while his teammate Ziegler came in behind in third (51.08). The lone victory on the day for the men came in the 800 Free Relay where Derek Hursch, Chris Inglis, Troy Nichols and Sbordon finished with a time of 6:49.66.

Sbordon's time of 4:03.44 in the 400 IM is the seventh fastest time is school history. Billy Brown who swam a 3:56.48 back during the 2000-01 season holds the record.

Other top finishes for the Minutemen were Hursch placing seventh in the 400 IM (4:06.69) and eighth in the 200 Free (1:46.33), Howard seventh in the 100 Fly (51.39), Dan Backler took seventh in the 100 Breast (59.23) and Kyle Jennings placing seventh in the 100 Back (52.58).

For the Minutewomen, freshman Anna Cavanaugh finished third in the 200 Free with a time of 1:52.82. That is the fifth best time in that event in UMass history. Christa Narus set the record of 1:51.04 during the 2008-09 season.

Chelsea Downing continued to produce for the women picking up the seventh place finish in the 400 IM (4:33.82). Jessica Starosielec took fourth in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:05.99. It was the relays that picked up the majority of the points for the Minutewomen on Saturday. The 200 Medley relay team of Jennifer Corriveau, Starosielec, Sarah Kanellas and Cavanaugh placed fourth with a time of 1:47.66, while teammates Gillian Bank, Tavis Potter, Kaitie English and Amina Meho came in behind them in seventh with a time of 1:48.05. The 800 Free Relay team of Potter, Meho, Downing and Cavanaugh took fourth with a time of 7:41.16.

Day three started off with the 1650 Free for the men, in which Sbordon finished fifth (16:18.32) and Inglis came in behind him in seventh (16:19.38). The 200 Back and the 100 Free saw three Minutemen finish in the top-8. In the backstroke Butler placed fourth (1:51.46), followed by Jennings in fifth (1:52.01) and Sbordon in eighth (1:57.42). The freestyle saw Ziegler take third (46.52), Sacco seventh (47.11) and Howard in eighth (47.39).

Other top-finishes for the men were DiMarco who finished sixth in the 200 Breast (2:07.88), Inglis who took eighth in the 200 Fly (1:59.36), and the 400 Free Relay team of Howard, Sacco, Hursch, and Ziegler took fifth (3:07.94).

On the women's side Molly Papish started off the scoring placing eighth in the 1650 Free with a time of 17:28.78. Cavanaugh continued her success on the weekend taking fourth in the 100 Free (52.88), she was followed by teammate Meho in sixth (52.94). Ingrid Woelfel took sixth in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:22.30. The 400 Free Relay team of Meho, Corrveau, Potter and Cavanaugh placed third with a time of 3:30.89.

The men put together a total of 707 points, 94 behind the winner BU. The women received 464 points, 401.5 off the winner BU. The two teams combined for 1171 points, which was good for second of all eight teams.

The Minutemen will be back in the action on Dec. 4 as they host Yale at Joseph Rogers Pool. The women will be heading to Northeastern to take on the Huskies the same day.
