DURHAM, N.H. - Three power play goals in the first seven minutes of the second period sparked No. 8 New Hampshire to a 3-0 win over the UMass hockey team on Friday night at the Whittemore Center. Freshman goalie Jeff Teglia made 35 saves for the Minutemen (0-6-2, 0-3-2 HEA) while Matt DiGirolamo made 19 saves for the Wildcats (5-1-2, 3-0-1 HEA). The teams will square off again tomorrow night, with gametime slated for 7 PM in Durham.

New Hampshire held a 38-19 shot advantage, including a 27-10 lead through 40 minutes of play. The Mass Attack went 0-for-6 on the power play and held a 33-26 edge in the faceoff circle while the Wildcats were 3-for-6 on the man advantage.

Teglia was immense and aggressive in goal for the Minutemen throughout the first period as the Wildcats outshot UMass 12-2, despite three Massachusetts power play opportunities. Along with Teglia, the Minuteman defense was crucial in preventing New Hampshire from taking an early lead with several blocked shots and pass break ups to reduce the number of UNH scoring chances, including a break up by Chase Langeraap on Phil DeSimone nine minutes into the period.

The Minutemen's best bid came on a counterattack following a big save from Teglia at the other end of the ice, as Marc Concannon and T.J. Syner created some offense on a two-on-one. Syner was sent into the net by Mike Borisenok, which drew a hooking penalty on the New Hampshire forward.

New Hampshire scored three power play goals in the first seven minutes of the second period and held a 15-8 shot advantage throughout the frame. Mike Sislo got things started for the Wildcats 2:15 into the frame during an abbreviated five-on-three power play. Blake Kessel began the play when he took a pass from DeSimone and controlled the puck at the point. Kessel then misfired on a shot, but the puck went right to Sislo to the left of the cage, where he roofed a wrist shot over Teglia.

UNH extended the lead to two just 75 seconds later on Damon Kipp's second goal of the season when Paul Thompson sent a shot from the left of the goal that bounced off Teglia's pads and into the right faceoff circle, where Kipp was waiting. Kipp then sent a wrist shot into the top corner before Teglia could recover. The Minutemen attempted to battle back after the New Hampshire goals, and nearly got on the board when Langeraap fed Peter DeAngelo with a pass to the doorstep, but DiGirolamo went post-to-post to deny DeAngelo of his first career goal.

The Wildcats went up 3-0 with 13:04 to play in the period as DiSimone completed a nice passing play as Brett Kostolansky and Paul Thompson made quick dishes before DiSimone buried his third goal of the year on a shot from atop the crease.

The Minutemen were awarded two more power plays during the third period, and threw several difficult shots DiGirolamo's way, but the junior netminder continued to backstop the Wildcats. T.J. Syner and Kevin Czepiel nearly broke the shutout with eight minutes to play in regulation on back-to-back backhanders on goal.
